Visit from Dutch commitee and Cultural Mapping of Brazil

On the 17th of June 2009, the Centro Cultural São Paulo hosted a group of Dutch representatives from cultural and foreign relations governmental institutions and organs. The visitors, who had already been to other cultural spaces in São Paulo, presented the publication Cultural Mapping of Brazil, put together by Brazilian and Dutch specialists. The group stressed that the document is not finished; it is rather a first step towards the development of joint cultural projects.

Monique Vogelzang, organizer of the foreign commission - and director of the Arts Department of the Dutch Ministry for Education, Art and Science -, explained that every four years the Dutch Ministries of Culture and of Foreign Relations elect a country as a kind of field for cultural studies. The objective is to learn more about the selected region, to understand its art system and to strengthen relationships. Brazil was chosen this time due to its dynamic economy and cultural diversity. The delegation was impressed by the vast space of the CCSP, and Monique related the building architecture to the Dutch fascination with rigid structures, such as the ones found in Piet Mondrian's work.

The Municipal Secretary of Culture, Carlos Augusto Calil, who also attended the meeting, emphasized the Centro's importance for the São Paulo capital. He pointed out that the place facilitates encounters because of its open architecture and free, uncontrolled spaces. Furthermore, he stressed that the Sergio Milliet Library - the heart of the CCSP - is one of the most visited in Brazil. The Secretary also said that there is a great demand for culture in São Paulo and that the Secretariat is building an extension to the Municipal Theatre, which will contribute to the regeneration of the city centre. In response to the Dutch commission's interest to better understand the Brazilian contemporary cultural panorama, there was also a debate about the changes to the Rouanet Law proposed by the Ministry of Culture. The debate was mediated by Martin Grossmann, director of the CCSP, based on the presentation on the subject given by University of São Paulo lecturer and former CCSP project manager Lucia Maciel Barbosa de Oliveira. Also present were José Roberto Sadek (Adjunct Secretary of Culture) and the heads of department from the Secretariat of Culture, as well as the directors of the Centro Cultural departments, amongst other members of staff. The Dutch Cultural Mission is formed by the following members: George Lawson (director of the Netherlands Fund for Performing Arts) Gitta Luiten (director of the Mondriaan Foundation), Janneke Van der Wijk (director of the Netherlands Centre for Music), Janny Rodermond (Director of the Fund for Architecture), Jan Jaap Knol (director of the Fund for Social Participation Through Culture Programme), Paul Mosterd (director of SICA), Dingeman Kuilman (manager of the Premsela Foundation for Design), Christine de Baan (manager of the DutchDFA Programme), Astrid Weij (coordinator of the International Department of the Netherlands Heritage Institute), Nan van Houte (coordinator of the International Department of the Netherlands Theatre Institute - TIN), Wouter Koelman (manager of the Fund for the Viusal Arts, Design and Architecture Programme), Maria Tuerlings (director of Transartists), Ole Bouman (director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute), Henk Heikamp (senior policy advisor of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences - Department of Arts) and Floor van Spaerndonk (director of Platform - e-culture).
